The function of the Pyrenean Mastiff was to follow herds of sheep from winter to summer grazing lands as a guardian and protector against wolves, bears and thieves. The Pyrenean’s distant relatives were probably the big dogs brought from Mesopotamia and Asyria to Spain about 400BC. The Pyrenean Mastiff became an "offer of the time" as the effects of railway and predator killings made their impact on the Pyrenean Mastiff community. With the assistance of the many dedicated enthusiastics involved with the breed, The Spanish Club commenced a breeding program from 30 selected animals, with the sole thought of saving the Pyrenean Mastiff from extinction. om seen dog , you could say that the "pioneers" have succeeded in their mission.
