Purchasing A Mastiff Breeds Puppy.
A Typical Pedigree.
When you purchase a
pure bred puppy you should receive the REGISTRATION PAPERS FOR THAT PUPPY. If
your puppy was purchased as a SHOW/BREEDING prospect you will receive
"Registration/Pedigree" ANKC PAPERS that in Victoria are "Blue." These are the
proper papers required that enable you as the owner to Show and Breed from this
particular dog.

If you have purchased a Pet/ Companion puppy, you
will receive "Limited Registration" ANKC PAPERS that are "PINK" in
Victoria. These papers mean that your puppy is still registered and purebred,
but is not allowed to be shown in conformation exhibitions and is not to be bred
or mated. The only way the registration papers of a canine registered on the
LIMITED REGISTER can be upgraded from LIMITED to MAIN REGISTRATION is with the
signatures of the REGISTERED OWNERS and THE BREEDERS.
How to read and understand a Pedigree.
At
first Pedigrees may appear to be total gobbledy gook. Unless you are familiar
with pedigrees from other animals it is hard to understand. Basically they are
basically a birth certificate for dogs. Below is a five generation pedigree.
It states the sire and Dam, the Grandsire & Dam and Great Grand Sire and
Dam and so on.
Where there are the "CH" or the word "CHAMPION" in
front of a dog it means that particular Dog/Bitch is an "Australian Champion".
If the dog is from the Europe and has the words CH it is a Champion of the
country listed.

In some countries any Genetic test results may also be indicated along side the names and registration numbers of any of the dogs in a pedigree. some breeders offer photo pedigrees on their web sites. It is advisable to study the pedigrees, and ask the breeder to see as much relevant information about the dogs on the pedigrees. Photos, videos, health test results, companion or show titles for the ancestors of a dog will all provide additional information and some indication of how your puppy will develop.
Showing Your Dog.
If you wish to show your puppy it has to have MAIN REGISTRATION PAPERS. The Blue Ones. You will need to join in the state canine authority where you live. In Victoria this is the VCA. You will be sent a journal in which there are shows advertised you choose which ones are on days that suit you so that you can enter your dog in this show. Please note that you can only enter ALL BREEDS Or Utility Breed Shows or Mastiff specific shows (you can not for example enter a mastiff in the Chow Chow Club Show).
Above is an example of a Show Entry form. You need to full one of these completely with the details of your puppy, its parents and all the relevant canine association numbers. You read through the journal and find a show. You fill the entry form out for that show and include a stamp self addressed envelope for the secretary to send you back your exhibit number. On the day ensure you have all the things your dog will need for the day, shade, water, a mat, leads collars and chairs for your self. Arrive at the show early and let the steward of the group 6 ring see your exhibit number and know that you are there. Tell them you are new to this and they will keep an eye out for you. Stay close enough to the ring so you can hear what number the stewards are calling. The dogs are almost always judged alphabetically so if you have a Douse de Bordeaux and there are boxers being judged and Dobermans outside the ring waiting you need to be close enough to the ring to see when the Dobermans are finished being judged. Ensure than you don't miss your number being called, it will be called 3 times and then you will be marked absent unless you declare to the steward that you are present and ready to go in the ring. Then the rest is up to you the dog and the judge. Good luck and enjoy yourself.
